Sports betting glossary

Every field has its own jargon with words and phrases that can not always be understood immediately - sports and betting are no exception. There are a lot of betting terms to master, not only for newcomers but also for already more experienced players. So just refer to this page when you see an unfamiliar word or phrase.

1X2
With this type of bet you predict which team (or player) will win the match.
1 : Home team wins (or the team that is listed first)
X : Draw
2 : Away team wins (or the team that is listed second)

2-way bet
In a 2-way bet there are two possible outcomes and you have to predict the right one. These bets are usual for all types of sports that don't allow draws (basketball, tennis, etc.). There are also lots of special bets that work according to the same principle. For example, Federer plays against Djokovic: who will win?

3-way bet
In a 3-way bet there are three possible outcomes and you have to pick the right one. The ordinary football bet 1x2 is a 3-way bet.

Accumulator (multiple bet)
An accumulator is a bet that combines multiple selections into a single wager that gains a return only when all parts win.
The advantage of an accumulator is that winnings are much higher at the expense of increased risk, but only a single selection need lose for the entire bet to lose.

American odds
Odds expression indicating return relative to 100 unit base figure. With money odds, whenever there is a minus (-) you lay that amount to win a hundred dollars, where there is a plus (+) you win that amount for every hundred dollars you bet.

Antepost bet (outright)
Antepost betting, also known as futures betting, are longer term bets.
Antepost markets generally offer better odds than would be available on outright winner markets closer to the start of the event because there are plenty of variables which can ruin your bet.

Banker bet
If you’re convinced about the outcome of an event, then you can play it within a system bet as a so-called "Bank". If you’ve decided upon a system bet (e.g. system 2/3), then you can combine it with one or more bank(s). For the success of your bet, it’s necessary for your bank bets to be correct and you must fulfill the same critera as with a system bet. If your bank bets are wrong, then your wager is lost.

Bet
The bet is to take a position on the outcome of a sporting match.
There are different types of bets:
• A ‘single bet’ is a bet on only one event
• A 'multiple bet’ combines different bets  into one bet. A winning combination is the one in which there are no missed picks.
• A 'system bet' is a multiple bet composed of several simple bets or combined bets (or both according to the situation) on several selections.

Bet account (player account)
Personal account where funds are credited and debited, including all personal registration and login information associated with the use of the Website.

Book
The size of a market offered by a bookmaker, e.g. a sportsbook would be all of the sports markets offered by a bookie, football book would be all the football bets offered, and so on.

Bookmaker
An company or individual licenced to receive bets from members of the public. Bookmakers must have a licence to operate in Belgium.

Cash back
Cash back is a promotion where you will get a percentage of the losses you encounter back.

Combined bet (multiple bet)
For a combination bet, at least two selections are combined. The overall odds result from the multiplication of the odds of the individual selections. In order to win the bet, all games must end as selected. A combination bet on 2 selections is called a double, 3 selections are called a triple.

Correct score
A bet on the score after set periods of play (at half time, after a period or at the end of the match, for example).
__

Decimal odds
Odds displayed in decimal format, odds include your stake. Returns are calculated by multiplying your stake by the decimal.
For example decimal odds of 4.00 (3/1) with a bet of 10 EUR will pay 10x4.00 = 40 EUR.

Direct red card
Direct red card is not equal to 2 yellow cards.
__

Double bet
An accumulator which involves two selections. Both must be successful for the bet to win.

Double chance
This is the possibility to simultaneously bet on two results of an event.
The options are: 1X, 12 en X2 with "1", "X" en "2” as defined above.

1/X : Home team wins or match ends in a draw
X/2 : Draw or the away team wins
1/2 : The home team wins or the away team wins

Draw in group
Player places bet on total number of matches to end a draw.
__

Draw no bet (DNB)
"Draw No Bet" is when it is only possible to bet on "1" (home win) or "2" (away win).

Duel
Player places bet on duel (Teams/Competitors/Driver/Racer/Corners/Penalties/Red Cards/Yellow Cards/Goalscorers).
Duel is achievement comparison of two given subjects. Winner is the subject with better score/achievement.

If both teams are eliminated in same phase, following order is taken into account:

  1. Team to seize more points
  2. Team with better goal difference
  3. Team to score more goals

If the achievement of both subjects is equal, Dead Heat rule applies.
Duel penalties do not consider possible extra time.

Earliest goal
Player places bet on team to take the least time in scoring first goal in the match.
__

Elimination after penalty kicks
Player places bet on whether the team will be eliminated after penalty kicks.
__

Extra time
The Player places bet on whether or not there will be extra time.
__

Final match referee
Player places bet on the name of the Final match referee.
__

Final Pair
Player places bet on Final Pair of competition.
__

First Corner in final match
Player places bet on team to take First Corner kick in final match.
__

'First goalscorer' bet
The first goalscorer bet is to bet on the first player to score a goal or a point during the match.

First time winner
Player places bet on the team to be the first time winner of a competition.
__

GG/NG (Goal/No Goal)
GG means that both of the teams will score in the match and NG means that one or both of the teams will not score in the match.

Goalkeeper to score
Player places bet on any goalkeeper to score. (Penalty shoot-out goals do not count).
__

'Goals in match' bet
The bet on the amount of goals consists of forecasting the goals scored during a match. You van bet on the total number of goals, the goalscorer, in what minute or halftime the goal(s) will be scored or which team will score first.

Group total goals
Player places bet on number of total goals in group.
Penalty shoot-out does not count.
__

Handicap
A handicap bet is a bet where one team is given an advantage (or a disadvantage) when calculating the result of the bet.
Example: Club Brugge – Anderlecht – ‘handicap Club Brugge +0.5’ the match starts with 0.5 – 0 in favour of Club Brugge instead of 0-0. This means that the bet will be won if Club Brugge achieves at least a draw.
Handicap bets are handy when you want to have higher odds when betting on a team that’s a clear favourite, or when you want to reduce your risk when betting on the underdog.

Head to head
In a contest with more participants (e.g. running or cycling) you choose the winner between two participants.
__

Hedging
Betting on two opposite outcomes of a bet, usually with different bookmakers, each offering favourable odds to either guarantee winnings or cut losses.

Highest scoring Group
Player places bet on highest scoring group.
__

Highest scoring match
Player places bet on match with most goals.
__

Highest scoring match in group/competition
Player places bet on highest scoring match in group/competition.
__

Highest scoring team in group/competition
Player places bet on highest scoring team in group/competition.
__

Hit                         
When you correctly predicted the outcome.

Includes
The individual selections you want to include in the multiple bets. If you do not want to include the event, click 'x' to uncheck the event. The event will be available for a separate bet but will be removed from all possible combinations.

In-play
Live. It allows you to place bets after the event has started.
__

Lowest scoring Group
Player places bet on lowest scoring group.
__

Lowest scoring team in group/competition
Player places bet on lowest scoring team in group/competition.
__

Match betting
The most popular and common fixed odds betting market is match betting. In standard match bets between two teams, winning odds are available for both, and the wager will either win or lose depending on the outcome of the event. Since a significant proportion of games end without any winner, the "draw" is offered as a betting option. Football fixed odds match betting is also known as 1X2 betting.

MVP
Player places bet on officially announced Most Valuable Player in competition.
__

Odds (price)
The odds correspond to the earnings in the event of a winning bet. The lower the odds, the higher the probability of occurrence. That is why the favourite (the one who is most likely to win) generally has the lowest odds. Inversely, there are outsiders who have higher odds.

Odd/Even
With 'Odd/Even' it is possible to place a bet on the number of times a predetermined event occurs (e.g., goals, points, corners, rebounds, penalty minutes, ...). ‘Odd’ is 1, 3, 5 etc.; ‘Even’ is 0, 2, 4, etc.  
Example: When Club Brugge – Anderlecht ends in 2-2, the number of goals is 4 = even number.

Over/Under (OU)
The 'Over/Under' bet is to bet the on the number of a specific event (e.g. goals, points, corners, rebounds,...). The 'Plus' bet means forecasting "more than" number of goals or points, the 'Less' bet is therefore forecasting on "less than" a certain number of goals or points.
Example: Club Brugge – Anderlecht –’Club Brugge over 2.5 goals’. This means Club Brugge will need to score at least three goals for the bet to be won.

Outrights
'Outright' or 'Place' betting offers the possibility to choose from a list of alternatives and to bet that a participant wins or ends at a specified position in the rankings of a certain event/competition.
Example: Tour of Flanders - Peter Sagan 'top 1-3' ... If Peter Sagan finishes in the top three, the bet is won.

Penalty saves
Player places bet on goalkeeper to have the highest number of penalty saves.
__

Placement/Group Placement
Player places bet on placement of the team/competitor in certain competition.
2 - Runner up / 1-2 – Finalist / 3 - Third place / 1-4 Semi-finalist / 3-4 Eliminated in semi-final (½) / 1-8 Quarter-Finalist / 5-8 Eliminated in quarter-final(¼) / 9-16 Eliminated in eight-final (⅛)

Player to score Hat-Trick
Player places bet on whether certain player will score hat-trick (1 player scores 3 goals in a game).
__

Profit margin
Like other companies we are dependent on a profit margin. That is why the odds we offer are  usually "incorrect". In other words: compared to the so-called "fair odds", they will be lower.
For example, if the fair odds for an event are 2.0, and our profit margin as bookmaker is 5%, this means that 1.90 ods will be offered.

Single bet
The simplest type of basic wager is the Single Bet. This is where a bet is placed on a game being won, undecided or lost.

Specials
The Special bet is to predict specific events on a match. This type of betting can also known as Match Specials or Player Specials (scores, doesn't score, red card, scores first goal, ...)
__

Stake
A stake is an amount of money wagered on a particular outcome.
__
System bet
The system is in many ways similar to the accumulator bet as it is placed on a number of selections, but with the big difference being that not all selections need to be guessed correctly to qualify for a return.
Example: System 3/5 (spoken "3 of 5"). You bet on all possible three-way combinations of five bets. If all of your predictions prove correct, you’ll get the maximum payoff. If you bet wrong, then you still have four of the 10 partial bets right. If you make two wrong bets, you still have the three-way combination right.

Team with most yellow/red cards
Player places bet on team to be shown highest number of yellow/red cards.
__

Third Place team
Player places bet on a third placed team in group to qualify to the next round (often on a wild card rule).
__

Ticket
The ticket is the betting slip on which your selections are entered.
__

Top Assistant
Player places bet on player to make the most assists during Competition. If two or more players make the same number of assists, Dead Heat rule applies.
__

Top Goalscorer
Player places bet on player score the most goals during Competition. If two or more players score the same number of goals, Dead Heat rule applies.
__

Top Team Goalscorer
Player places bet on player score the most goals in team during Competition. If two or more players score the same number of goals, Dead Heat rule applies.
__

Total 0:0 matches
Player places bet on total number of matches to end with no goals.
__

Total 3+ matches
Player places bet on total number of matches to end with 3 or more goals scored.
__

Total 0-2 matches
Player places bet on total number of matches to end with less than 3 goals scored.
__

Total 4+ matches
Player places bet on total number of matches to end with 4 or more goals scored.
__

Total 5+ matches
Player places bet on total number of matches to end with 5 or more goals scored.
__

Total 6+ matches
Player places bet on total number of matches to end with 6 or more goals scored
__

Total competition yellow/red cards
Player places bet on total yellow/red cards shown in entire competition. Cards shown after regular time do not count.
__

Total group yellow/red cards
Player places bet on total yellow/red cards in a group. Cards shown after regular time do not count.
__

Total missed group penalties
Player places bet on total number of missed penalty kicks in group. Penalty shoot-out does not count.
__

Total Penalty kicks in phase (Group phase/eight-final/semi-final/semi-final/final)
Player places bet on total number of penalty kicks in phase. Penalty shoot-out does not count.
__

Total Points in group
Player places bet on number of total number of points the team will seize in group phase.
__

Total scored group penalties
Player places bet on total number of scored penalty kicks in group. Penalty shoot-out does not count.
__

Total team goals in group/competition
Player places bet on total number of goals the team will score in group phase/competition.
__

Total team penalties
Player places bet on total team penalties. Penalty shoot-out does not count.
__

Total team yellow/red cards
Player places bet on total team yellow/red cards. Cards shown after regular time do not count.
__

Total yellow/red cards in phase
Player places bet on total yellow/red cards in a phase (group phase/eight-final/quarter-final/semi-final/final) of a competition.
Cards shown after regular time do not count.

Treble bet
A treble bet consists of 1 bet involving 3 selections in different events. All must be successful to get a return.
__

Trixie
A trixie system bet consists of four bets involving three different selections. If we mark the three selections as A, B and C, then we can easily see that the bet includes three doubles: AB, AC and BC and a treble: ABC. If selections A and B win, but selection C loses, then AB double is the only one that qualifies for the return. If the player correctly guesses all three selections, all four bets qualify for a return.

Value bet
Simply put, if you believe the odds taken are better than the mathematical chance which the team involved has of pulling off the outcome, then you have a value bet. This means, that if a tennis player has an actual mathematical 50% chance of winning a match, and the odds on that player are above Evens, then bet value is better than the mathematical odds, so that is a value bet.

Void
'Void' is used to describe a selection or bet that is no longer valid, for which the stake is returned (odds of 1.00). There are a number of reasons why a selection may be declared void, including an event being abandoned or not taking place on the scheduled date, ...

Winnings
The winnings are the result of the total stake multiplied by the odds of a successful bet.
For example: you placed a 100 EUR bet on a home victory (1), with odds at 2.1. In this scenario, your gross profit is 210 EUR. Your net profit is 110 EUR.
